Government Fines, Penalties and Restitution

What Can Bankruptcy Do About Criminal Fines, Restitution,
Housing Code Violations or Fines, Parking Tickets?

The likelihood of bankruptcy helping you reduce criminal fines and restitution is every limited.

The primary reason you do a bankruptcy is to discharge your debts. If you have significant debts that are not dischargeable, a Chapter 7 bankruptcy will probably not help you. Some relief may be available in a Chapter 13 but the debt from criminal fines, restitutions or other financial agreement arising from a crime or criminal activity is not dischargeable in the bankruptcy.

Basically the following debts are not dischargeable:

  1. Criminal Fines
  2. Restitution
  3. Parking Tickets
  4. Toll Road Tolls
  5. Municipal Fines
